Cost and payment

Aetna health insurance may cover some or all of the cost of COVID-19 and Flu tests taken at CVS Pharmacy drive-thru locations.

Health insurance is accepted for tests with provider visits at MinuteClinic locations. If you plan to use health insurance for your visit, you must bring your insurance card. Note that you may still have out-of-pocket costs after your insurance is applied, as determined by your health plan. Check with your insurance provider if you have additional questions about coverage.

No-cost testing, funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, is available for qualified patients including uninsured and US veterans at both CVS Pharmacy and MinuteClinic.

At CVS Pharmacy, the fee for the test is $29.99. Any additional cost due to unforeseen circumstances are the sole responsibility of the patient or guarantor, not CVS Pharmacy. At MinuteClinic locations, costs will vary depending on the services performed.

Taking the test

A sample is made up of nasal secretions collected on a swab. This is done by inserting the swab into your nostril approximately 1 inch into the nasal passage (midway) with the most visible drainage or the nostril that is most congested if drainage isn't present. The swab is rotated several times, removed gently and this process is repeated on the other side. At a CVS Pharmacy drive-thru, please note that you need to administer your own swab or bring someone that can do it for you. At MinuteClinic, a licensed provider will administer the swab for you.

  • Vehicle (if you’re being tested at the CVS Pharmacy drive-thru.)
  •  Health insurance card (if using your health insurance.)
  •  Confirmation code (from your confirmation text or email.)
  •  Your mobile phone (in case we need to reach you.)

MinuteClinic and CVS Pharmacy locations use rapid antigen COVID-19 & flu tests to check for active infection.

We understand that you may need to bring someone with you; however, only patients who have qualified and scheduled a visit online can be tested or assessed for treatment.

At CVS Pharmacy, patients must be 3 years of age or older for COVID-19 and flu testing. Patients must be 18 months or older at MinuteClinic. A parent or legal guardian must complete registration for all minor patients (Nebraska: a minor is anyone under age 19). Patients 3-15 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. At a CVS Pharmacy drive-thru, an adult may need to assist with sample collection using the swab. At MinuteClinic, a licensed provider will administer the swab.

The health dashboard is a place where you can access your health records, including COVID-19 and flu test results and vaccination cards. You can also type in your symptoms and let us guide you to the right care options.

Treatment

If you test positive, providers at select MinuteClinic and CVS Pharmacy locations may prescribe you antiviral medication. Your eligibility depends on certain medical criteria related to:

  • When your symptoms started
  • Your age
  • Your location
  • Your medical history
  • Your likelihood of developing severe COVID-19 or flu complications

If you meet the criteria, we may call you to discuss if you should take this medication. We'll review your medical history, your current medications and any medication allergies. Pregnancy could limit prescription offerings. You can also contact your primary health care provider about this medication or other treatment options.

You can ease your symptoms by:

  • Drinking lots of water, juice and warm soups to stay hydrated.
  • Getting plenty of rest to help your immune system fight infections.
  • Taking pain relief medications, like acetaminophen or ibuprofen, to soothe body aches.

Pharmacist flu treatment prescribing is available in California, Colorado, Idaho, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, South Dakota, Tennessee, Washington, Wisconsin and Wyoming. MinuteClinic providers can prepare a personalized treatment plan that may include over-the-counter or prescription medication if indicated.
