Get up-to-date on your vaccines
Vaccines are essential for keeping dangerous diseases from becoming epidemics, as they often once did. Without vaccines, viruses such as polio, pertussis, measles, mumps, diphtheria and rubella would not be nearly eradicated, but rather, widespread and rampant. For this reason, the CDC recommends that healthy people of all ages, including children 18 months or older, keep up-to-date on their immunizations. Some vaccines the CDC recommends the general population get including the following:
- Tdap and DTap
- HPV
- IPV
- Meningitis
- Influenza
- MMR
- And more
Though most vaccines provide immunization for 10 years to life, the flu shot will only protect you for a single flu season. This is because researchers design the vaccine to protect against the strain of the virus that they anticipate will infect the population each given year. Though the vaccine is not 100 percent effective in preventing the illness, it does help the body fight the virus. Because of this, any immunized person who contracts the flu may experience lesser symptoms and have a reduced risk of developing complications.
